Read to the end of the ingredient list on any ZÉORA bottle and you'll find Origanum Majorana Leaf Extract. That's sweet marjoram, a Mediterranean kitchen herb you rarely see in skincare, and it appears in all three steps of the ZÉORA Ritual: Clarus, Oktélia and Hydronéa.
Here's what marjoram is, what published research says about it (and what it doesn't), and why it belongs in every step.
What sweet marjoram is
Sweet marjoram (Origanum majorana) is a small aromatic herb from the mint family, Lamiaceae, the same plant family as sage and lemon balm. It's a close cousin of oregano, with a softer, sweeter scent. Most people know it from cooking, but it has long been valued for its aroma too: a 2022 review from the Agricultural University of Athens notes that marjoram is grown in many parts of the world and is widely used both in food and in perfumes (Life, 2022).
On ZÉORA labels it's listed as Origanum Majorana Leaf Extract, meaning it is drawn from the leaves of the plant.
What research says about marjoram
Marjoram has been studied mostly in food science and plant chemistry, not as a skincare ingredient, so it's worth being precise about what the research covers.
- A plant rich in aromatic compounds. The 2022 review in Life describes marjoram's essential oil as containing many naturally occurring plant compounds, which give the herb its aroma and much of the scientific interest in it (Life, 2022).
- Antioxidant activity in the lab. In a 2022 study published in Molecules, researchers analyzed marjoram essential oil and measured moderate antioxidant activity in standard laboratory tests (Molecules, 2022). The same study found that marjoram oil varies a lot in composition depending on where the plant is grown.
Both papers looked at marjoram's essential oil, while ZÉORA uses an extract of the leaf, and neither tested skin or ZÉORA products. They help explain why marjoram is valued as a botanical, not how it performs in a finished formula on your skin.
Why marjoram is in ZÉORA
ZÉORA began with a notebook from 1850, kept by a woman named Zéora on the Greek island of Samos. She had reactive, sensitive skin and studied the plants growing around her, keeping only what her skin accepted. Marjoram is a herb of Mediterranean gardens and hillsides, and it fits naturally into her story.
It's one of the seven botanicals of our Samos Garden, alongside Greek-sourced yarrow, sage, damask rose, chamomile, lemon balm and green tea. The same seven plants appear in every step, so marjoram travels with you through the whole routine. We chose it as an antioxidant Mediterranean herb, part of how the Ritual helps support skin as it faces everyday environmental stress.
Where you'll find it
- Clarus, our gentle gel cleanser (100 ml).
- Oktélia, our lightweight serum (30 ml).
- Hydronéa, our replenishing cream (50 ml).
All three come together in The ZÉORA Ritual.
How to use the Ritual
- Clarus · Cleanse. Massage 1–2 pumps of Clarus onto damp skin for a few seconds, rinse lightly and pat dry.
- Oktélia · Calm. Apply 3 drops of Oktélia, one on the forehead and one on each cheek, and spread until absorbed.
- Hydronéa · Restore. Smooth Hydronéa evenly over clean skin to seal in hydration.
Use the routine morning and evening. Hydronéa does not contain SPF, so in the morning finish with a broad-spectrum sunscreen you already tolerate.
A note for sensitive skin
Hydronéa is our fragrance-free step. Clarus and Oktélia do contain fragrance, and every full ingredient list is on its product page, so you can check each one before you buy.
If your skin is sensitive, introduce one new product at a time and patch-test first. The American Academy of Dermatology explains how to test a skincare product before using it on your face.
